The College of Engineering (CoE) has held a working group meeting (10th September 2019) with the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) in the Ashanti, Bono East and Ahafo Regions. The meeting was a follow-up to an earlier consultative meeting (April 2019) which explored ways of strengthening collaboration between industry (AGI) and academia (KNUST).

The working group meeting discussed some concrete activities that the two sides will be implementing in the coming months. The AGI team comprised Mr. Thompson A. Attebila, Mr. Kwasi Nyamekye and Madam Hawah Braimah. They represented both the leadership in the Region as well as industry sectors (agro-processing, textiles & garment).

The meeting was chaired by Prof. Kwabena B. Nyarko who is Project Leader for the KNUST Engineering Education Project (KEEP). KEEP is a Government of Ghana – World Bank project aimed at strengthening the development impact of engineering education.

A presentation on some projects implemented by graduating (undergraduate) students at the College of Engineering was made by the Industry Partnerships Coordinator under KEEP, Dr David A. Quansah.  Some of the projects were (1) Design and Construction of a Low Cost and Portable Ventilator to Assist Patients with Difficulty in Breathing (2) Development of Centrifuge for Cassava Starch Extraction and (3) Design and Implementation of an Automatic Egg Collector System.

The meeting agreed to implement a number of activities in the coming weeks. An industry survey will be conducted to better appreciate the challenges of industry which will form the basis of research projects at various levels within the College. Some student projects have already been agreed upon.

The College of Engineering team also included Dr. Lawrence Darkwah and Mr. Kwame Agyeman-Prempeh Agyekum of the Departments of Chemical Engineering and Telecommunications Engineering respectively.

The next AGI-KNUST/CoE working group meeting is scheduled for 3rd December 2019.
