Jemima Lartey is a graduating MPhil student from the Chemical Engineering Department of KNUST.
Her research interests include preservation of Bamboo, quality control to ensure standardisation, analytical methods like physico-chemical properties, phytochemical composition, extraction and processing of raw materials into finished products.
She treated bamboo using an eco-friendly plant-based extract (neem leaf extract) for her MPhil work. She developed an optimal dose concentration of the extract to help resist Bamboo from decaying organisms. She also developed models to link Bamboo's decay rate to the extract's concentration. Her work successfully preserved the bamboo using the neem leaf extract, which was rated resistant by the BS EN 252 standard.
The KNUST Engineering Education Project (KEEP) has been instrumental in her academic success by providing financial support. She is very grateful for the support and encouragement received from the staff and management of KEEP.
She plans to carry out further work in preserving bamboo to substitute timber and wood products and help curtail the menace of our known species going extinct.
