Admission of Candidates to Limited Partial Funding Research or Higher Degree Programmes for 2022/2023 Academic Year

Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, School of Graduate Studies, College of Engineering and World Bank Africa Centres of Excellence Project

The College of Engineering of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, has received funding from the Government of Ghana as part of the World Bank Africa Centers of Excellence (ACE) for Development Impact Project. Within this project, the College seeks to deliver high quality postgraduate courses, conduct and disseminate applied research focused on addressing development challenges related to industrialization, digital development (ICT), energy systems, renewable energy, manufacturing, exploration and development of oil and gas industry.

In connection with the ACE, applications are hereby invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission to limited taught and research, and higher degree programmes at the KNUST College of Engineering.

1. PhD Programme Fellowships

Limited partial funding to pursue full time programmes in the following:

  • PhD. Bioengineering
  • PhD. Computer Engineering
  • PhD. Materials Engineering
  • PhD. Mechanical Engineering
  • PhD. Sustainable Energy Technologies
  • PhD. Telecommunications Engineering
  • PhD. Chemical Engineering
  • PhD. Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Admission Requirements

Candidates applying for Doctor of Philosophy degree must have a Master’s degree with an average of at least 60% from a recognised Institution.

Please refer to the Graduate Admission Brochure for specific requirements related to the programme being applied for.

In addition

  • Candidates with one publication in a journal, as first author, have an advantage.
  • Candidates must provide evidence of current and previous employments.

2. Master’s Programme (MSc/MPhil) Fellowships

Limited partially-funded scholarships for applicants from Ghana and other West African countries to pursue full-time Master’s degree in the following specialisations:

  • MPhil. Computer Engineering
  • MPhil. Bioengineering
  • MPhil. Materials Engineering
  • MPhil. Power Systems Engineering
  • MPhil. Chemical Engineering
  • MPhil. Mechanical Engineering
  • MPhil. Renewable Energy Technologies
  • MPhil. Telecommunications Engineering
  • MSc. Renewable Energy Technologies

Admission Requirements

Candidates applying for a Master’s degree must have a Bachelor’s degree (minimum of Second Class (Lower Division)) in a related field from a recognised Institution.

Note

All Candidates from non-Anglophone countries must have an internationally recognised Certificate of Proficiency in the English Language (TOEFL or British Council, IELTS) with above average score or be available to attend a three (3) months English language course at the KNUST-Department of English.

Mode of Application

Prospective Ghanaian applicants should purchase an e-Voucher containing Login ID/Serial Number and PIN for GHȼ280.00 at the following banks: GCB Bank, Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG) or Ecobank or dial *447*160# on any network and follow the prompts.

All International Applicants are to generate Login ID/Serial Number and PIN for the online application using the link (HERE!)

Candidates should then proceed to the online admissions website (HERE!) and begin the application process.

Once the process is completed, candidates MUST PRINT OUT TWO (2) COPIES of the completed application form from the portal and submit them (by post) to the School of Graduate Studies together with the under-listed supporting documents:

  • Two passport-sized photographs
  • Detailed CV and two letters of reference (one from a supervisor at the Master’s level)
  • Official transcripts and certificates for BSc. and MSc. degrees
  • Proof of ability to communicate in English for Candidates from non-Anglophone countries
  • PhD. and MPhil. candidates are to submit soft and hard copies of a letter of motivation (max. two pages) with the heading outlining why you want to study, what makes you well-suited to study in your chosen specialisation, current occupation, how the Programme will fit into your professional vision, how your home country stands to benefit after your training.
  • PhD. and MPhil. candidates are to submit both soft and hard copies of a short concept note (max. 3 pages) outlining the justification, objectives, methodology and expected outcomes of a research idea.

Any hand delivered application shall not be processed. Deadline for completion of online application is Friday, 30th September, 2022.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend a selection interview in Kumasi OR via telephone/Skype. The date of the interview will be communicated after short listing. 

Only candidates who successfully gain admission shall be notified subsequently.
